DRAGONS

HISTORY

When Tann was young and the forests, mountains, and deserts were quiet and empty, Father Sun and Mother Moon decided to add to the world. Yes there were fawnlings, but they were simple and plain. A creature worthy of being called the celestial beings children needed to be created.

Father Sun began first. He went to the desert and built a strong beast with massive wings. He filled his belly with fire that spewed from his lips when he breathed. Father Sun was so proud of their new child and boasted on his strength and ferocity.

That night Mother Moon went to the mountain tops. She created a graceful creature, filled with curiosity and intelligence. Mother Moon gave her the knowledge of magic. How to control and shape the world around her to her desire. Mother Moon silently wondered at their new child, and was so excited to show her to Father Sun.

When Father Sun and Mother Moon brought their creations together, they were shocked. They were so different. How could they have each created something so drastically different? They were both creating their children and yet they had wound up creating completely different beings. They were going to begin again when something incredible happened. The Sun’s creation and the Moon’s creation came together and decided that their differences were in fact their strength.

These were the first dragons and their children bore all of their parents gifts. Strength, intelligence, fiery breath, and the knowledge of magic.

While the ways of magic have been lost to time, dragons still view all of their society as equal and celebrate their differences as strength. While some dragons are more spiritual than others, most view this as what they believe it to be. Commonly the tale of Mother Moon and Father sun is called a mere myth, story to tell young dragonlings and teach them about how differences should be celebrated.  If some had taken more to heart the message of this origin, war could have been avoided, and lived could have been saved.

As time passed the darkness of greed clouded the minds of the dragons.  It is not certain what happened, but blood of the innocent was spilled and eggs were shattered.  Perhaps it was a battle started by the dragons themselves, or perhaps it was the humans who sought to conquer their enemies, either way the damage caused was irreparable.  Dragons had no choice but to fight. Those who were once peaceful caused war - not only with themselves but with others, rendering the dragons in a fearful light.

When aroused dragons are fierce opponents, and they give nothing but their all.  Their anger burned hot, fast and they slaughtered dozens, mistaking fawnlings for simple deer and treating humans with vengeance as hot as the sun.  Someone had spited them, and they would not be refused.  The war was long and bloody for all, and in the end the dragons consented to meet with the fawnlings and the humans to make peace.

Utira the Seer was there to negotiate, and though she tried her best, not all qualms were settled between the races.  Heartbroken by the deaths of their innocent children and defeated by their treatment, the dragons and their Jarl retreated to the mountains.  There they would wait for two centuries.

Memories of their beginnings have faded and the war they waged upon humanity and fawnlings caused a dwindling in their numbers, for dragons are not a hasty peoples.  Though their culture remains strong, discord continues its run in the darkness.  Murmurs of dissent have been creeping in the shadows, and with the death of Jarls Geirmund and Hela they are at a loss.
